Andy Bannister


Prior to working with Solas, Andy was Director and Lead Apologist at the Canada office of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Andy holds a PhD in Islamic studies and is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Other Faiths at Melbourne School of Theology. Andy is the author of An Oral-Formulaic Study of the Qur’an and his latest book, The Atheist Who Didn’t Exist (or: The Terrible Consequences of Really Bad Arguments),  is a humorous engagement with the New Atheism. When not traveling, speaking, or writing, Andy is a keen hiker, mountain climber, and photographer. He is married to Astrid; they have two children, Caitriona and Christopher.

David Robertson

Associate Director / Trustee

David is the minister of St Peter’s Free Church in Dundee, Scotland (a church that is best known for being the church of Robert Murray McCheyne).  He is the author of Awakening (a contemporary account of McCheyne’s life), The Dawkins Letters, Magnificent Obsesssion and Engaging with Atheists. He writes regularly for The Scotsman and Christianity Today.  David enjoys reading prolifically, playing chess and sampling fine whisky.  David is married to Annabel and they have three children; Andrew, Becky and Emma Jane.

Scott Simpson

Editor, Solas Magazine

Scott has more than 30 years’ experience as a journalist across print, radio and television. In addition to his role as Managing Editor of Solas magazine, Scott is also Managing Editor of The Salvation Army’s publications in Australia including overseeing online and social media platforms.  An Australian, Scott has spent more than 12 years living in Scotland. He initially worked at Teen Ranch Scotland, a Christian campsite located between Dundee and Perth, before returning to journalism at The Scotsman in Edinburgh. He has also worked at the Edinburgh Evening News.  A keen runner, cyclist and footballer, Scott is married to Anne and they have three daughters, Cait, Molly and Skye.

Alan Dunn

Alan worked in the legal department of JP Morgan Chase and Clydesdale Bank and has an interest in Corporate Governance. In his native New Zealand he worked as a Baptist Minister for many years at Whangarei Central Baptist Church. Luxembourg was home for a while where highlights included dealing with German colleagues in the automobile industry and leading board meetings in French while in Paris. Alan has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in both Law and Theology. He is married to Jen who is a surgeon at Ninewells Hospital, they have a young son. Alan enjoys fitness, playing chess and following his beloved All Blacks.

David Hartnett

Project Development Officer

David came to Scotland from the USA to complete an MSc Electronic Media at the University of Dundee in 2002.  His wife, Jennifer, is a rural GP.  David is responsible for managing the Solas magazine, writing grant proposals, fostering individual donors, website development and other project support work at Solas.

Al Smith

Digital Media Producer

Al produces, shoots and edits all our digital media output (Quantum of Solas, Short/Answers, etc.) as well as our website and social media graphics.  He has a Law Degree and Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Glasgow, but his career prior to becoming a Christian was in sales and marketing. Ally attends Knox Church Perth, is married and has one daughter.

Tim Allyn


Tim has a broad range of work experiences from mechanical engineering to church planting in Sweden as well as working as a marriage and family therapist.  His current work with Solas includes organizing events, accounting, and fulfilling book and DVD orders.  Tim also works as a counsellor/therapist operating Momentum Counselling Services in Dundee.  Tim and his wife, Bev, have three sons Jonathan, Andrew and Daniel.
